Santa Barbara Adventure Co.

Interview with our Field Coordinator Laird Riddell

When did you first start working for Santa Barbara Adventure Company (SBACo) and how did you find you way here?

I started working for SBACo in 2011 after moving to Santa Barbara in 2010. I knew I wanted to live and work in Santa Barbara so I researched several outdoor companies, with SBACo on the top of the list.

My path to being the field coordinator for SBACo started in high school, where I became an Eagle Scout. After high school I knew I had found a knack for teaching, so I studied education in College. During college I spent my summers guiding trips in New Mexico. While I loved teaching, I realized that I did not want to spend my time in a classroom, so after college I pursued a career in Outdoor Education. My main passions are teaching traveling, and working with my hands, so SBACo is a perfect fit.

What do you do when you’re not guiding for SBACo?

There are a lot of things that keep me busy when I’m not preparing or leading trips. I am a full time dreamer, I like to build and make things, I like to hike and explore the beautiful central coast of California, and I enjoy reading.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you while guiding a trip?

I can’t recall anything funny that has happened to me, but I do get asked some funny questions. I was asked once by a kid on a trip “why do the birds only go to the bathroom on the white rocks?” that made me laugh.

What is your favorite trip that SBACo does?

The Mountains to Shore bike tour. You get to see all the best of Santa Barbara in one day!

Any suggestions for someone wanting to become a guide?
