Many organizations in Santa Barbara County are committed to identifying and marking historic sites and structures with signs or plaques. These groups do an outstanding community service at their own expense over many years and county-wide. The Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West have placed 39 plaques, E Clampus Vitus has placed 34 plaques, tiles or signs; and the Goleta Valley Historical Society has placed 35 signs. Caltrans Public Works has several monuments. The Well Fargo stagecoach has 25 signs. Samples of these are shown below. The County Landmarks Committee also provides valuable official guidance in selecting historical sites to preserve. All photographs by the author, Justin M. Ruhge.
